it is a common belief that antibacterial soaps prevents infection, we are not only deceived by producers of these soaps who always claim it works but also our daily experience with microbes as given us reasons to belief it works. But a hidden truth is that antibacterial soaps are not better than common soap.

Antibacterial soaps are not  for any reason preferred over soap and water in preventing bacterial infections. The commonly used ingredient in antibacterial soaps is triclosan. Though, it is not only included in soaps, but also in cosmetics and toothpaste. Food and Drug Administration reported that there is no certainty in the claim that users of the product of triclosan are less likely to bacteria infections than users of ordinary soap and water.

It is even so much alarming that excessive or regular use of antibacterial soap may breed resistance bacteria, the frequent usage of antibiotics leads to development of resistance by the bacteria resulting to difficulty in treating bacteria issues. This led Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to warned doctors against un-strictly prescription of antibiotics. Also, the Food and Drug Administration added that it is wise to avoid the use antibiotics in raising animals. Since a recently concluded research deduce the widespread of antibiotic resistant bacteria due to the regular use of triclosan.


Triclosan is potentially enough to cause other health hazards. Conclusion based on a series of research on animals confirmed that triclosan may affects the proper regulation of the thyroid hormone. If such occur in human, also, it could in no time lead to obesity, early puberty, infertility and other health issues. Other research claimed that allergies are much to be developed by children long-term exposed to triclosan, which ubiquitous around in this present, the statistic from a recent study confirmed the presence of the chemical in urine of 75% of the people tested.

At large, antibacterial soaps is likely to be harmful to our environment, with its existence in so many product, most in the long run make it into the sewer into rivers and even oceans where inhibits algae’s ability to perform photosynthesis.

Antibacterial is not to be believe to help to prevent infections caused by viruses the dominating infectious diseases; the flu, ebola, and enterovirus D68 antibacterial drugs does not work for viral infection.
